Three Benefits of CEREC® Same Day Dental Crown Technology
CEREC® dental crowns are also known as same-day dental crowns because they are made in one day. Using CEREC® technology, general dentists can custom-create a ceramic dental crown in just one appointment, which is an advantage because traditional crowns require two to three appointments spread out over a few weeks. Aside from the quick turnaround times, CEREC® crowns offer various other benefits, which can be helpful to know as it will help patients make an educated decision on what treatment route they want to take. Benefits of CEREC® same-day dental crowns
Outlined below are three benefits of CEREC® dental crowns, which are made the same day through CEREC® technology that relies on CAD/CAM technology.
1. Convenient
One of the main benefits of CEREC® dental crowns is that they are convenient for most individuals. Traditional dental crowns require patients to visit their dentist two to three times over a few weeks. The first appointment involves the removal of the decayed parts of the tooth, as well as taking the actual impressions. Impressions are then sent to the dental lab, where the traditional crown is custom-made. A few weeks later, the patient returns to their dentist for permanent crown placement. Sometimes, the general dentist may require a third follow-up appointment to check on the crown placement.
However, with CEREC® dental crowns, the process is very different. Instead, the patient only has to visit the dentist's office one time, unless a follow-up appointment is needed or desired. In one appointment, the dentist can take impressions, create the CEREC® crown, and place it over the patient's natural tooth. The main difference is how the impressions are taken. Traditional crowns require physical molded impressions, whereas CEREC technology takes digital images, which allows for the crown to be made in minutes.
2. Discreet
CEREC® dental crowns are made of ceramic, which is a material that is white in color. Dental crowns completely cap a tooth, which means the natural tooth will no longer be visible. With that being said, it is important for many people to have a restoration that appears aesthetically pleasing. Aside from the color, ceramic appears similar to a natural tooth, which ensures that the restoration is not noticeable.
One thing to keep in mind with CEREC dental crowns is that ceramic is the only material that can be used. While the material is white in color, it is not one that can be bleached later on for teeth whitening. The dentist may recommend replacing the CEREC crown later on if teeth whitening is desired. Nonetheless, even traditional dental crown materials cannot be bleached either, there are just simply more material options.
3. Less risky
Another benefit of CEREC® crowns is that there is not as much risk associated with them. Because the crown is made in a dentist's office in just one appointment, patients do not have to wear a temporary crown. Temporary crowns are not strong or reliable, which often puts the patient's mouth at risk. Eating and speaking may be awkward or uncomfortable for the patient when wearing a temporary crown. More often than not, the temporary dental crown becomes damaged while waiting for the permanent one. In this case, it has to be re-applied, which requires yet another appointment to the dental office.
Additionally, there is more risk that damage will take place, which can ultimately hurt the natural tooth. However, with CEREC® crowns, the patient is not required to have a temporary crown because it is all done in one appointment, thus reducing any risks.
Keep in mind
When it comes to CEREC crowns, it is important to remember that the appointment will be lengthier because it is just one visit, as opposed to two or three, which is the case with the traditional route. Dentists often recommend that patients have about two to three hours available to have a CEREC crown placed. This gives enough time to take the scans, clean out the tooth, remove decayed areas, place the crown, and make any adjustments.
